Holding a bag of groceries in one and her baby on the other hand, Sneha looked at the stairs going up to the third floor. She was cursing- “Why the power cut happened now? The lift won’t work now!” Climbing up stairs was like getting to the Mt. Everest for her. Sweating and panting, her mind went into the last year memories. Those nine months were so beautiful. She ate whatever she liked. She was so pampered by her family. She was the center of attraction in her baby shower. And after delivery, things changed suddenly.
Sneha has changed a lot in past two months. She felt that her family seemed to be her enemy as they always suggested good or bad for the baby. She didn’t like to wear good clothes. She gets tired so quickly. The health-conscious girl has got more inclined towards junk food. She has started hating her body and feels that everyone is criticizing her food and body. Anxious and sometimes teary, she feels loved nowhere. She fights with everyone around her. In fact, she has started hating breastfeeding her baby.
So, Mommies, for few days to months, we might have felt it in our lives. Postpartum blues not only involves mood swings, fatigue, tearfulness, anxiety, and irritability, it brings depression too. Hormonal fluctuations, sleep deprivation and the immense life changes contribute to baby blues. Lack of support, unrealistic expectations, and personal stressors can exacerbate these feelings.
How can we help mothers like Sneha?
- By normalizing the experience that others also faced similar feelings and sense of isolation.
- By purchasing good attire for her and her baby. New clothes with comfortable fabric bring a lot of positivity.
- By encouraging self-care with adequate rest, proper nutrition and joyous atmosphere.
- By life partner working as support system by sharing baby jobs (especially at night) lessens the burden on new mom.
- By encouraging mother to go out and meet friends and family and have open communication with them.
Remember, reaching out for help is a sign of strength, and helping a new mother is a bigger one. Her experience during her postpartum is never forgotten by her. Every mother deserves the support necessary for a healthy and fulfilling postpartum experience.
